Tri-Cities Intermodal and Great Northwest Announce Intermodal and Multimodal Alliance

McGregor Company Asset-based trucking and warehouse operator expands local footprint

WALLULA, WA, UNITED STATES, September 15, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Tri-Cities Intermodal and Great Northwest Transport have formed an alliance that spans both intermodal and multimodal capabilities. Under the arrangement, Great Northwest will assume the lift operations at Tri-Cities Intermodal facility in Wallula, WA. They will also provide 3PL services at the warehouse located adjacent to the ramp as well as bulk transloading.

The two companies will also work to provide seamless intermodal service for international and domestic customers. “This is an important step in expanding our portfolio of services.” said Theodore Prince, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Tri-Cities Intermodal. “Having a ramp operator that can also provide local drayage, and transloading significantly enhances our intermodal and multimodal value propositions. In my experience, there are times when the customer wants to deal with a truck to navigate their door-to-door transportation solution. Trucks are not the enemy of intermodal – they are the critical first and last mile”

The joint truck-rail service option allows more effective coverage of the underserved markets of Idaho and western Montana. Girnus observed that “None of my drivers will miss crossing Snoqualmie Pass -- particularly during the winter months when they must put chains on and off. Intermodal is win-win. I can offer better economics to my customers while operationally generating more predictable turns, encountering less terminal delay and providing a better opportunity for drivers to return home each night.”

The opportunity expands well beyond intermodal. Great Northwest will also assume operations of the 210,000 square foot warehouse located on the property. Prince observed that “Intermodal proximity is everything. Not only does it offer zero drayage for importers and exporters, but Free Trade Zone (FTZ) capability allows importers to defer tariffs which are increasingly problematic.”

The multimodal opportunities are many. The warehouse supports truck-to-boxcar loading. Large shipments of apples are expected to start next week. There is also truck-to-container bulk transloading on site and rail-to-container transloading just south of the yard served by Columbia Rail. “These are all skillsets that we have offered for many years” said Girnus. “Great Northwest Transport is part of The McGregor Company, and we believe that these services can help our agronomy customers.” The operation will be led by Terminal Manager, Kourtney Morgan.

Tri-Cities Intermodal is served by Union Pacific Railroad and Columbia Rail. The facility has an initial capacity of 75,000 lifts annually, with a roadmap to significantly expand as traffic develops. Its Wallula location provides access to multiple transportation networks, including import and export service through the Northwest Seaport Alliance, Union Pacific's domestic intermodal network, truck-to-container agricultural transload for export, and rail-to-truck transload opportunities utilizing Columbia Rail.
