US Primary Elections Produce Key Wins Across Multiple States
In Iowa, businessman Zach Lahn secured the Republican gubernatorial nomination after defeating US Representative Randy Feenstra, who had received support linked to Donald Trump. Lahn will now face Democratic state Auditor Rob Sand in the general election.
On the Democratic side in Iowa, State Representative Josh Turek won his party’s nomination after a close contest with fellow lawmaker Zach Wahls. He is set to compete against Republican US Representative Ashley Hinson, who also secured her party’s nomination.
In New Mexico, former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland won the Democratic nomination for governor after defeating Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman. According to reports, Haaland, who previously made history as the first Native American Cabinet secretary, will face Republican Gregg Hull in the general election. A win would make her the first Native American woman elected governor of a US state.
In New Jersey, Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot, won the Democratic primary in the competitive 7th Congressional District and will challenge Republican incumbent Tom Kean Jr. in November. Another Democratic nomination in the state went to former Army physician Adam Hamawy in the 12th Congressional District.
In California, the gubernatorial primary remained too close to call late into the night. According to reports, Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra emerged as leading contenders, with former Democratic candidate Tom Steyer trailing closely behind.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass advanced to a runoff election as she seeks re-election, alongside several other candidates, including media personality Spencer Pratt, as the race moves toward a final round.
